5. American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) is not an organ of the Greek Orhodox Church, but it has had a long association with the Church. Originally founded as a fraternal brotherhood in 1922 in Atlanta, Georgia to combat, through education, attacks on the Greek community by the Ku Klux Klan and others, AHEPA's present mission "is to promote Hellenism, Education, Philanthropy, Civic Responsibility, and Family and Individual Excellence." While most members of the AHEPA are men of Greek descent, membership in AHEPA is not restricted to Greeks. Prominent non-Greek members of AHEPA have included Presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry Truman, Senators Robert F. Kennedy and Sam Ervin, and others who subscribe to AHEPA's mission. AHEPA is non-partisan and nondenominational. Our church has an active chapter of AHEPA involved in many philanthropic works.

6. Daughters of Penolope The Daughters of Penelope was founded in 1929 as the women's auxillary of the AHEPA. As such, the Daughters share a common mission with the AHEPA -- "to promote Hellenism, Education, Philanthropy, Civic Responsibility, and Family and Individual Excellence." As with AHEPA, the Daughters of Penelope is not an organ of the Greek Orthodox Church. Membership is not restricted to women of Greek descent, and the organization is non-partisan and nondenominational. Our church has an active Daughters of Penelope chapter which, like AHEPA, is involved in many philanthropic activities.

The Brotherhood of St. Moses the Black
The Brotherhood of St. Moses the Black
is a pan-Orthodox nonprofit organization. Its mission is to minister to Americans the gift of Orthodoxy. In an effort to be good stewards of the manifold grace of God (I Peter 4:10), the organization sponsors an annual
conference which

explores in depth the African roots of Orthodox Christianity (click here to listen to audio recordings of the 2007 Ancient Christianity and African-American Conference on Ancient Faith Radio). The organization is especially dedicated to bringing the faith to those who have little or no exposure to Orthodox Christianity. Its vision is to bring Americans closer to Jesus Christ. The Brotherhood is administered by Fr. Moses Berry of Theotokos 'Unexpected Joy' Orthodox Mission Church (OCA) in Ash Grove, Missouri, and by Dr. Carla N. Thomas of Anniston, Alabama. Fr. Moses is also curator of the Ozarks Afro-American Heritage Museum.
