Smithsonian Folkways Recordings is a project of the Smithsonian Institution. This project seeks to support "cultural diversity and increased understanding among peoples through the documentation, preservation, and dissemination of sound." Founded in 1948 by Moses Asch and Marian Distler as Folkways Music and Service Company in New York City, the company's business papers and archive of traditional, ethnic, and contemporary music and spoken word recordings from around
the world were acquired by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage on Asch's death in 1987. Artists recording on the Folkways label have included Pete Seeger, Huddie Ledbetter (Lead Belly), and Woody Guthrie, among many others. Folkways also released The Anthology of American Folk Music, a collection of recordings which influenced generations of American folk musicians.
The Folkways Sacred collection includes many recordings of Orthodox chant and services. However, Orthodox chant and sacred music is also to be found in other Folkways recordings in unexpected places (one example can be found here), so be sure to browse their selections. Smithsonian Folkways albums are available for purchase on CD, cassette, or by downloading either complete albums or tracks. The secular folk music of traditionally Orthodox countries and cultures is also available on Folkways recordings. Finally, Smithsonian Global Sound, recently transferred to Smithsonian Folkways, makes available recordings, educational materials, streaming sound, and features a database searchable by parameters such as country and culture.
