5. St. Catherine's Monastery, Sinai Penninsula, Egypt -- This is the official website for St. Catherine's Monastery. This monastic community has been in continuous operation since at least the third century C.E. at the traditional location of Mt. Sinai. The monastery is also home to many ancient icons, works of art, and manuscripts. Some of the icons shown on the site may date back to the fifth century C.E. or earlier. Many of these icons are written in a transitional style from realistic Greco-Roman and late Egyptian to early Byzantine forms of painting. Compare this style to frescoes and mosaics found in Pompeii and elsewhere in the late Roman world. As such, these represent some of the most ancient icons in Christendom. The monastery also preserves the relics of St. Catherine, and has been a Christian pilgrimmage site for seventeen centuries. In 2002, St. Catherine's Monastery was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site catalog.
